The Cross, the Mask, and the Frame: A MegaCity Story

James Inedu-George (Head of Design, HTL)

The first talk in the 2019-20 History of Art & Architecture Lecture Series – this year about “Making” – charts a path to a newer architectural worldview by evaluating the location of African Traditional architecture in the pantheon of global architecture. The techniques that have dominated architecture over the past decades can be summarised into three strategies: The Cross, the Mask and the Frame. Architects have used these extensively but I believe that the regime of such techniques is over. The world is tending towards African Traditional Methods of spatiality, and the next step in the production of Art and Architecture needs to take direction from African Traditional Architecture and its city.

James Inedu-George (M.Arch) is an architect and Design Director of HTL , an international architecture firm where he focuses on innovative sustainable solutions and future cities.
