The Arts Library collection of research materials consists of over 200,000 volumes, including 110,000 books, journals, videos, microforms, and CD-ROMs as well as 95,000 art exhibition catalogs. Collection strengths include medieval illumination, Northern and Italian Renaissance art, American art and architecture, and Chinese painting and calligraphy. Specialized holdings include artists' books, sketchbook facsimiles, Chinese scroll facsimiles, the Pat Fish Collection of mail art, and the Wayne Andrews Collection of photographs of American architecture.
The Department's Visual Resource Collection maintains a teaching collection of slides numbering over 380,000. A digitization project currently underway in the Visual Resource Collection will expand the department's resources for innovative research and teaching with CD-ROMs and computerized image databases. They also maintain a growing list of links to online digital image archives.
UCSB's Main Library (Davidson) has valuable strengths in fields related to Art History, such as the humanities, natural and social sciences. Special Collections include holdings in the book arts and Chicano art. The California Ethnic and Multicultural Archives, also known as CEMA, is a division of the Special Collections Department of the University Libraries at the University of California, Santa Barbara. CEMA is a permanent program that advances scholarship in ethnic studies through its varied collections of primary research materials. Together, the UCSB Libraries provide online access to specialized research resources for art (including but not limited to the Grove Dictionary of Art, Art Index, BHA, etc.). Numerous additional online catalogs and databases allow students and faculty to access the library holdings of the University of California and beyond.
