Rachel Winter, a second year Ph.D. student working on contemporary art from the Middle East, was awarded the UCSB Graduate Student Internship Fellowship. Rachel will use this fellowship to support her summer internship with the Art of the Middle East Department at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). As an intern for the Art of the Middle East Department, Rachel will work with the curatorial team on new temporary exhibitions, the reorganization of the collection, as well as early preparations for the move into the new Peter Zumthor building that is slated to open in 2023. The Art of the Middle East Department at LACMA houses three collections, including the art of the Ancient Near East, the art of the Islamic World, and the contemporary art of the Middle East. LACMA’s collection of contemporary art from the Middle East is the largest in the United States. The Graduate Student Internship Fellowship, supported by the Graduate Division at UCSB, funds graduate students participating in internships that art important for professional development and achieving career goals outside of academia.
