The Visual Resources Collection consists
of over 360,000 35mm glass bound slides which cover all periods and phases
of Western and non-Western art and architecture. It also contains a growing collection of digital assets, and the staff provide assistance with access to the various licensed and free digital image archives available. Several in-house scanning projects
are underway, which provide resources for Art History course website study
image archives and digital presentations for the classroom. The primary function
of the VRC is to provide a teaching and research service for History of
Art & Architecture Faculty; however it is open as a resource
to all UCSB faculty and graduate students (with permission). In addition,
the VRC has a small reference book collection (for in-house use only).
Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The Collection loans slides to:
1. UCSB Faculty for on-campus classroom use.
2. Art History Teaching Assistants for weekly sections.
3. Art History graduate students for seminars and lectures.
4. Graduate students from other UCSB departments for seminars and lectures
on condition that prior arrangements are made for a faculty member to
assume responsibility for the slides.
5. Museum staff from both the UCSB Art Museum and the Santa Barbara Museum
of Art for teaching purposes only.
Alternative arrangements for borrowing slides can be made with:
1. Santa Barbara Museum of Art Slide Library.
2. Learning Resources (the campus photocopy service) Kerr Hall (893-2448)
3. Arts Library (where a copystand is available; for information contact
the Arts Library at 893-2850.)
The VRC is a climate-controlled environment, with a stable temperature
of 70F and stable humidity of 45-50%. This environment ensures a longer
and healthier life for 35mm slides, but only if the slides remain there
most of the time. Slides that sit in offices, houses, briefcases or cars
for extended periods of time are going to have shorter lives - they will
grow mold or fungus, warp from dampness and changes in temperature, and/or
become discoloured.
In addition to shortening their lives, keeping slides out of the VRC
ensures that they are not available for anyone to use. Our aim is to
keep the Collection's slides in circulation as much as possible, and
we request your assistance in accomplishing this.
The slides in the VRC are mounted in archival Gepe mounts, which are
made of plastic and glass. These mounts protect the film, but they are
also quite fragile - please do not drop, bend or otherwise traumatize
them. When transporting them, please keep them in a stiff box, binder
or carousel - do NOT put them in plastic slide sheets and lay them between
books, in your suitcase, etc.
Many of the labels on our slides have old and inferior glue, causing
them to fall off when handled. We are doing our best to retro-catalogue
and relabel these slides; however they fall off faster than we can keep
up. Please help us by returning loose labels with the slides they belong
to.
1. Slides are released for lectures, sections and seminars only. Slides
may not be reproduced in any medium or duplicated for any reason, due
to copyright law.
2. We ask that VRC users be respectful of their fellow patrons. Please
be aware of your noise level and the space in which you are working.
All users are asked to clear light tables of slides when they leave (any
slides left overnight will be removed and placed in the user's Do Not
Refile basket)
3. Art History faculty have priority over slides and work areas.
4. Undergraduate students are NOT permitted to use the slide collection
under any circumstances. Please do not have meetings, conduct study sessions
or give tests in the visual resources collection. If needed, please notify
the curator if you need to keep slides aside for students who need to
make up tests or exams. We will keep the slides on hold for you, and
you may check out a projector if a classroom with projectors is not available.
5. Please allow enough time before lectures to find your slides - the
VRC staff is available to help locate slides, but cannot assist in pulling
slides for you.
Faculty and graduate students who are new users should check in with
the slide room staff, who will provide a brief orientation. Please feel
free to ask questions! Teaching assistants MUST attend an orientation.
Please observe the following:
1. Each borrower is responsible for all materials from the time they
are received by him/her until they are returned to the collection. Borrowers
should withdraw and return their materials in person, unless they have
given the collection written permission for others to do so.
2. Borrowers other than Art History Faculty are asked to notify staff
when returning slides - this is the only way they can be checked in.
3. The use of a colored chip to replace each slide removed from a drawer
is mandatory. These chips help the collection staff and other users determine
which slides in a drawer are on loan and who has them; they also greatly
assist in refiling. Use one chip for each slide taken. Please return
your box of chips to the bookshelf near the entrance after use.
4. Do not check out more slides than you think you can use in one lecture.
We aim to keep slides in circulation as much as possible.
5. Place any slides that will not be checked out into the basket on the
front counter for refiling. Do not attempt to refile slides.
6. After selecting your slides, submit them to a collection staff member
for photocopying. With the exception of Art History and Art Studio faculty,
the slides of all borrowers must be photocopied; please allow enough
time for this procedure.
7. Unless special permission is granted, slides should not be set aside
more than two business days in advance of the time they will be used.
With the exception of slides required for Art History sections, slides
may not be removed from the collection until immediately prior to the
class and should be returned immediately after. If the collection is
closed during the time of the class or lecture, slides may be picked
up in advance and/or returned the next business day.
8. Patrons whose slides are overdue will be notified by telephone or
email. If the collection does not hear from the patron after a second
notice is given, the patron may be fined and/or barred from using the
collection. The replacement fee is $10.00 per slide.
