university of leiden — ucsb history of art cooperative exchange program

The Departments of History of Art at the University of California Santa Barbara and the University of Leiden have established a cooperative exchange program that enables graduate students and faculty from each university to pursue study and research at the partner campus. The departmental liaisons include professors Mark Meadow from UCSB and Reindert Falkenburg from the University of Leiden. The two departments have complementary strengths, especially in the areas of Early-Modern art; Modern and Contemporary art; Global art; History and Theory of Collections and History of Architecture. This exchange program is available by application to faculty and graduate students regardless of field or period specialization.

All instruction at the University of Leiden is in English, making it possible for faculty and students in all areas of specialization to participate without additional language training. For both faculty and graduate students, the exchange period will be for approximately four months, corresponding to one semester at University of Leiden. Graduate students will remain enrolled and will receive credit at their home program.

UCSB’s Graduate Division and the Department of History of Art and Architecture together provide funding to underwrite the travel and living expenses for two UCSB graduate students per year to attend Leiden. The funding is equivalent to that provided by a Teaching Assistant position, including stipend, fees and insurance. Students will participate in seminars at the host institution and will normally work with a faculty member on a research project. Advanced UCSB graduate students may be invited to teach a graduate seminar while at University of Leiden.
