Colin Raymond, first-year Ph.D. student, presented his paper “The Evolving Social Consciousness of Chim↑Pom” at a graduate student panel held in conjunction with the Japan Art History Forum (JAHF) business meeting at the 2016 Association for Asian Studies Annual Conference in Seattle, March 31 - April 3. The talk discussed the evolution of art collective Chim↑Pom from cavalier provocateurs to socially-engaged advocates for nuclear awareness was a deliberate yet gradual process. Through an analysis of Making the Sky of Hiroshima “PIKA!” and its reframing in the Hiroshima! exhibition series, his presentation investigated the developing methods of Chim↑Pom’s social interventionist art practice. Colin was also awarded a travel grant from JAHF to offset the cost of his attendance.
