Incoming Graduate Students

The Department of the History of Art and Architecture offers financial support to outstanding applicants to the Graduate Program. Exceptional candidates are nominated by the Department for University Central Fellowships, which include Regents' Special Fellowships, Graduate Opportunity Fellowships, and those fellowships designed to encourage and enhance diversity on campus for qualified candidates.

In addition, the Department offers its own Department Fellowships to outstanding applicants and supports research travel for Ph.D dissertations (both pre- and post- ABD) with revenues from the Margaret Mallory Endowment, other private foundations and contributions. Teaching Assistantships are the primary source of financial support and career experience for graduate students. Finally, the Department's students have an outstanding record of success in obtaining fellowship funding from sources outside the University once their graduate work has begun. Our graduate students have received national and international fellowships (see Recent awards), and many have obtained museum internships through the Department programs offered in conjuction with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Huntington, the UCSB Art Museum and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art.

Continuing Graduate Students

Looking for funding? The major national and international funding sources are generally in high demand, which means that the competition can be fierce. However, graduate students in our department have received research grants from several highly competitive programs Remember that a smaller pool of candidates can increase your chances of success. Searching for smaller fellowships, including fellowships offered by local organizations such as Rotary Clubs, can be well worth the trouble. The list provided here offers descriptions and links for some of the major fellowships in art history; the other list , provided by the University's Graduate Division, offers more general guides to funding. for further information, see the list of students who have won awards recently or ask at our office.

Travel Monies for Conferences: Graduate Division and the University's Graduate Deivision offer travel fellowships designed to assist graduate students in travel costs incurred for the presentation of conference papers.  Students must apply for travel monies from Graduate Division first before submitting a written request to the Department. Requests should include a description of the conference and applicant's role, as well as a budget and a copy of the invitation. Further details can be found in the Graduate Student Handbook.
