Larry Ayres is a specialist in Romanesque and Gothic art, dealing primarily with painting and manuscript illumination of these periods, as well as with metalwork and ivory carving. His honors include fellowships from the American Academy in Rome, the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Among his recent publications are articles or chapters in The Early Medieval Bible, 1994; Il Gotico Europeo in Italia, 1994; and The Codex Calixtinus and the Shrine of St. James,1992.
