This
course is a chronological survey of Japanese visual culture from prehistoric
figurines to manga-influenced contemporary art. Looking broadly at
how the role of the artist shifted in different periods, we will analyze
objects according to how format and style relate to original social
function. We will also historically consider how artistic taste changed
according to whether the country's doors were open or shut to foreign
exchange. As well as
focusing on painting, sculpture, and architecture, we will touch on
calligraphy, ceramics, and fashion. Prerequisites: Not open to freshmen.

ARTST 105 INT 3D SCULPTURE: ARCHITECTURAL DRAWING & VISUALIZATION EC#55202
|
The aim of this course is to introduce the visualization of architectural
space, and to understand why architects draw the way they do. Students will
learn to read plans and sections, to relate these architectural
representations to buildings, and to learn the basics of drawing in two and
three dimensions. This introductory exploration of architectural drawing
principles and motivations will comprise a variety of brief lectures,
discussion, short field trips on campus, light reading, architectural
modeling, and manual drawing. The course should appeal to students
